Festivals

China is a unified multi-ethnic country. The festivals of 56 ethnic groups are extraordinary. They are developed in a long process in history. A festival is usually held in a specific time of a year that could be an annual celebration or ritual. Festival of all ethnic groups in China can be divided into six major types, i.e., celebration for the New Year, the starting of a season related to the production activities, the festival for youth, commemorative activities, special customs and religious activities.
 
Ethnic festivals are heritage of culture and customs, and contains rich cultural connotation. They are both an expression of passion for life, hope for the future. They are means of demonstrating the ethics, manners, way of communication and behavior. The festivals have strong impact on the emotion development and cohesion of social groups.
 
Many festivals related to the seasons. People either pray for good harvest, worship of the gods, tribute to the hero, singing and dancing or dating in festivals. The festivals are living fossil of the history of a nation, a concentrated expression of the national way of life and traditional production. They are vivid display of life and culture.
 
Although the festival of all ethnic groups vary in terms of content and form, but these festivals have common characteristics, e.g., stability, the popularity, ethnic distinctive and heritage successive. Many ethnic festivals have been observed for hundreds of years, and some even experienced a thousand years. As a cultural phenomenon deeply rooted on the earth, the festivals are one of the cultural treasures to be revealed.
 
Of human activity on display in the China Ethnic Museum, some of the themes are adapted from the various festivals of ethnic groups. These activities will be arranged depending on the season.
