Shoes, Headdresses and Bags
China enjoys a long and brilliant history and culture. 56 nationalities have lived side by side in brotherhood and created our civilization. Our apparels reflect not only our civilization of thousands of years, but also abundant spiritual deposits, such as the life conventions, aesthetics viewpoints, nationality differences and religious beliefs. Among them, the headdresses, shoes and bags often turn out to be extraordinary and significant. The traditional Chinese shoes, headdresses and bags come from everyday life of the common folks. Their use represent the development of society in a certain period of history, and the attitude to cultural values, functional values and aesthetic values that they carry become more and more attractive and inspiring as time passing by.
Part One: Headdresses - High above all
Head is the highest part in human body and a most vulnerable one. Therefore, numerous kinds of head dressings are used to protect the head. By their decorative and attractive effects, certain status or power of a person is also revealed.
Part Two: Shoes - Shining under the feet
Shoes, socks and puttee are used to protect and decorate one's feet. Traditional Chinese dressing used to 'emphasizing on the headdresses while neglecting the shoes'. But there is another saying: 'a worn-out shoe, a probable poor'. As the practical function of the shoes weighs heavily against their value of decoration, shoes are the first among the apparels to abandon their traditional styles. That is why the shoes that retain the traditional style appear a treasure to us.
Part Three: Bags - A riot of variety
Bags make an important component in the traditional Chinese apparels. Various types of satchels, rucksacks, backpacks, knapsacks, scent bags, wallets, tobacco pockets, dalians (a long, rectangular bag sewn up at both ends with an opening in the middle, usually put on the shoulder), and cloth-wrapper etc, may contain various articles and decorate people's chest, back, waist and shoulders. They are different in materials, shapes, sizes, colors, crafts and uses. They clearly convey the information about the nationality, social status, age, sex, marital status, aesthetic ideas of their owners.
